taking in all the beautiful scenery and pondering the meaning of life,
and sleeping, of course.
Also we couldn't have made it without a portable DVD player and his favorite movies Happy Feet and Cars.
When we stopped for breaks, he would get out and run around,
and then get back into his car seat without a single complaint. We drove all through the night on Saturday and then most of Sunday night too. That was pretty intense! We pulled over to sleep on the side of the road for an hour on Saturday, and other than that, we just caffeinated ourselves and hoped for the best.
If we did not have to stop so many times to pee, we would have definitely made the trip in under 30 hours. Next time we're all going to wear diapers like Noah.
We wanted to surprise my family, so they had no idea we were coming. We just showed up at their house at 4:00 in the morning on Monday. The look on their faces was priceless! Grandma just about had a coronary. Whoever went and woke her up said "there is kind of an emergency, I need you to come out here" so you can imagine what she looked like when she came out to the family room, and then when she saw us standing there. It is so nice going home to Kentucky, we are definitely surrounded by a lot of love there. And as always we enjoyed our time with the Piepers. The drive to them was worth it and we'll do it again sometime!
Unfortunately in our packing frenzy we left the camera battery charger at home, so we didn't get many pictures. The scenery was beautiful! But now at least I have pictures in my head to go with all the states we saw (12 in all). There really are some beautiful places in the US. The deserts of Arizona and New Mexico were surprisingly beautiful. We drove through golden fields in Texas and saw some crazy dairy farms. Oklahoma had some nice green farmland scattered throughout, but watch out for those toll roads and police officers. Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois all had lots of forestland and open fields. Kentucky's skeletons of trees broken in the ice storm were pretty wild. I slept through Kansas. Colorado's mountains, with all their wildlife, were amazing. And even coming home we were impressed with the sights right here in St. George, Utah.
I have always wanted to travel the world, but during this trip I realized that there is enough to see right around here. So until I'm rich and able to take my world travels, I will be content with cross country car trips.

Let me get this straight. You were going to Vegas but then decided to go to Kentucky instead? That's AWESOME!
Wow what a trip! Glad you were able to see your family.
You two indeed created a gem of a traveler. 30 hours? The 6 we drive to Boise are borderline awful a third of the time. I figure we'll have to save longer road trips for when our kids are 15. And it still may be awful.
How fun to surprise your folks though! What a way to spend spring break!
You were going to Vegas so you thought you may as well drive to Kentucky?? That's so great! I love it! I love the pictures of cute Noah! When are you going to come visit us?!!
We missed you at our Kiddie Kandid session. The girl who took the pictures for us tried her best, but still, I know you'd have done better. By the way, she said you didn't even work there anymore!
Glad you got to get away and see your family. Someday we'll see you when we're in St. George!
Road trips ARE fun! Isn't it funny that kids seem to sense the difference and just chill? Jane would cry on 30 minute car rides but when we moved from Florida she was awesome. That brings back fond memories of our latest moves.
I really miss Kentucky in the Spring! I bet the dogwoods and Bradford pears were in bloom!
So I'm a bit confused. I drive home to Ky a lot. I've went on I70 & I40 & I80. In order to see AR, TX, OK you would have went on 40. To see KS(I always try to sleep through it too or drive through at night), MO, and CO it would've had to be 70. So was it one route there and another back? Or some crazy wild mishmash for roads. lol. Either way I salute you. I also completely understand you. I woke up one Tuesday and decided to drive home. I came back to UT six months later. lol!!
Dana- Very funny about your spur of the moment 6 month vacation. You are right, we went 2 routes, the southern one (I 40? I think) on the way there, and the northern I 70 coming back. We wanted to see as much of the country as possible. We did drive through St. Louis, by the way, and we loved it, and I thought of you!
What a sweet life it is to wake up to such a beautiful, wonderful, delightful surprise! Thank goodness you are extremely gifted travelers and you also know where to come on a whim...
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU --
We love you all.
